Container is a series of paintings made from the behavior of paint and the contours that cut it out.
For many years, in my work as an illustrator, I have decided on the finished image first and controlled the picture down to its details. In this series, I partly reverse that direction. For the surface that becomes the inside of each vessel, I set only the conditions: how the ground is prepared, how the paint is allowed to adhere, how the layers are applied. What happens there is left in a state I cannot know until I see the result. Neither a story nor a composition is prepared in advance. Of course, once I set the conditions, it is no longer pure chance. But I believe that control which determines the result and control which only sets the conditions are two different things.
Partway through the series, I adopted one method. When I mix paint for one vessel painting, I use the surface of the next painting as my palette. After the first vessel painting is finished, that surface, covered with traces of mixing, is worked into a texture by wet sanding and other means, and becomes the next vessel painting. At that point, another new surface becomes the palette. In this way, a chain continues in which the by-product of one work becomes the ground of the next. There is also a practical reason: it keeps leftover paint from going to waste.
The main point at which I make decisions about these accumulated layers is the wet sanding. Sanding unearths traces of earlier works buried beneath. How far to sand, where to stop, or whether to add more layers: I try to gather all decisions about the inside of the vessel into this moment.
The formless matière that results does not become a work on its own. Finally, I cut the surface out with the contour of a vessel—a physical clipping mask, performed on an actual painted surface. The moment the contour is given, the material events inside—drips, abrasions, failures of adhesion—change from abstract to figurative and stand up as a single presence. I am not painting a vessel; I am using a frame in the shape of a vessel to extract events of paint.
What belongs to the outside of the vessel, on the other hand, I design deliberately: the shape of the vessel, its position in the picture, the background color, and the position and typeface of the serial number. Here I keep the pleasure of designing that I know as an illustrator. The inside is left to chance; the outside is designed. This division of roles forms the backbone of the series. Through the serial number on each work, numbered individuals line up, one after another, in the world.
This series did not begin as a way to express something. As I followed the urge to paint and kept layering surfaces, at some point I began to see this structure overlap with a question I have long carried: why was my consciousness assigned, by chance, to this body and not to someone else's? An uncontrollable layer of matter (a consciousness that arose by chance) is cut out by a contour (the assigned body: the Vessel) and appears as a single individual. Repeating this act of cutting out on the picture surface may be something like continuing to confirm that absurdity.
