I have been asked to judge an illustration competition called ‘Choice’. The competition is organized by Genkosha Publishing and held every two months to announce winners on their bimonthly Illustration Magazine. The Choice is quite popular among emerging artists, and what makes this competition unique is that it is judged by only one creative professional all the way through. The judge could be an illustrator, art director, designer, or sometimes an editor. It varies every time.
So I went to do the 167th Choice last month. There were approx. 1900 pieces from 600 entrants, and I had to choose ten winners and six associate winners. It was very exciting experience.
My new children’s book (text by Naoko Higashi) is out now. Published from Kumon Publishing.

The Sea, The Sea
by Iris Murdoch
512 pages; frontispiece and 8 colour illustrations.
The book I have been working for The Folio Society is out now. All the illustrations are narrative, and required a lot of research, but I really enjoyed this job.
It is called biokite but actually just a kite made into a shape of bird. There are a variety of biokites available, such as condor, falcon (hayabusa), seagull, or even butterflies. I tried flying the kite today, but it was very frustrating as the wind stopped so often. On the contrary, when the wind was too strong, the kite flipped upside down and hit the ground. Thought it was quite difficult to handle. I also felt the string was super thin and hard to find when I had to rewind it.

I got this image selected for CA annual 50.
They printed my piece very small in the last year’s annual, so I hope this one gets a little better position this year.
I went to Roppongi on Friday because there was an outlet sale at Wilkhahn, where I bought something unintentioally…
I also took a quick look around the shop called Living Motif, which was in the same building with Wilkhahn. I found this multifunctional desk designed and built by Stilvoll was on display, and I fell in love with it. I didn’t dare buy it but I thought it was incredibly well made. Looked great as a drawing table, too. They said these desks were handcrafted one by one, and they were not even taking back orders because they wouldn’t be able to make that many at a time.
Mr. Chris “Elio” Eliopoulos did this cool fan art for my earthling guy!
Thank you very much, Chris!
